__NOTOC__
Welcome to the pre-public version of the '''Videogame Interface Wiki'''.

The goal of this wiki is to promote non-standard videogame interactions by cataloguing all sorts of videogame interfaces and providing information for game players and game makers on how to make use of them.

The short-term goal is to make this place less empty, then to make it less hideous.

Whoops, theme's borked again :3

Currently:

* Um-ing and ah-ing over the best way to represent [[:Category:Adaptor|adaptor]] compatibility.
* We've hit 30 [[:Category:Controller|controller]] entries!

== How To Help ==

NB: Check out the [[Contributor Guide]].

A good way to start could be to:—

* Fix any typos or small factual errors.
* Add images to pages that need them.
* Create categories that red links are pointing to.

More advanced:—

* Create yourself a user page, and use that play with formatting, write drafts, etc.
* Create a page for a controller, adaptor, piece of software you are familiar with.

A flight-yoke-like shell that holds a [[Wii Remote]] and a [[Wii Nunchuk]]. Has points of articulation in the base and the parts that hold the controllers. Attaches to a table with a suction cup.

The two shells/handles can be removed and swapped. I can't think of a game where it'd be useful to have a yoke with two wiimotes or two nunchuks, but if you buy two units it's an option!

I've seen three different boxes for it, and released under various brand names: A-Power, Pega, CTA Digital Accessories, and Ostent.

Rjt: More template info

==Pages==

===Typical Page===

A typical page on this wiki starts with an ''[[#Infoboxes|infobox]]'' which usually has an image of what the page is about, and some useful information. Most of this information also appears in the form of categories at the end of the page. When looking at the code for a page these are probably the two most confusing sections at first. When you start editing you may want to leave these out until you are more comfortable with Mediawiki syntax. '''You don't have to feel guilty or anything about that, its' a wiki, the point is that we can all create pages together.'''

The rest of the page should be fairly easy to read.

===User Pages===

Attached to your account there is a page that only you can edit, called a ''User Page''. You may like to use this to introduce yourself, list pronouns, outline contact boundaries, etc. You can get to it via:

* The menu to the right of the search bar,
* This special link: [[Special:MyPage]],
* Putting the URL
<nowiki>https://videogameinterface.wiki/index.php/User:</nowiki>[username]
(where
[username]
is replaced by your username) into your browser.

You can also create ''[[#Subpages|Subpages]]'', which you can use for things like drafts, experimenting with wiki syntax, or more permanent things like pages related to the contents of the wiki but with a personal bent.

{{comment|Rjt|For example I have a scrappy page for my controller collection [[User:Rjt/Collection]], and one for collecting info. about the [[User:Rjt/Pro_Controller|Pro Controller]] naming convention.}}

User Pages also have ''[[#Talk Pages|Talk Pages]]'' attached to them. You can use these to publicly

===Subpages===

''Subpages'' are extra pages attached/related to a specific page. Practically they're not much different to a regular page, though they do link back to their parent; they're more of an organisational tool.

They can be useful for:

* Breaking down long pages into smaller ones.
* Making extra pages attached to your own ''[[#User Pages|User Page]]'': for testing things out, or making personal lists, or whatever.
* Adding specific, detailed information that might otherwise take-over its parent page. For example, this page with [[PlayStation_Analog_Joystick/Virtual-On_Marz|settings suggestions for using the PlayStation Analog Joystick with ''Virtual-On Marz'']].

To indicate that something is a ''subpage'' you use a forward slash (/) in its link. For example, a subpage of this one could be linked to with
<nowiki>[[/subpage]]</nowiki>
, and would be accessible at
<nowiki>[[https://videogameinterface.wiki/index.php?title=Contributor_Guide/subpage]]</nowiki>
.

===Talk Pages===

Talk Pages are for discussing the articles they are attached too. For example you may want to get feedback on an edit before you make it, talk about an issue with information on the page, propose an idea for how things could be organised better, etc. If there's something you'd like to see explained on this page you could mention in on [[{{TALKPAGENAME}}|this page's talk page]], for example.

You get to them via the 'Discussion' link near the top of each page.

The Talk page on the main page of the wiki can be used for more general discussions about the wiki.

There are also Talk Pages on [[#User Pages|User Pages]] that you can use to talk with wiki members.

The [[mw:Help:Talk_pages|Help:Talk_pages]] entry on the Mediawiki Wiki has a good guide to conventions.

==Syntax==

===Infoboxes===

===Tables===

Making tables can get pretty messy, Mediawiki has particularly weird syntax. You may find it helpful to start with a table generator like this one browser-based one: [https://www.tablesgenerator.com/mediawiki_tables Tables Generator], which even let's you do fancy stuff like merge cells.

Some examples of tables on this wiki:

* [[:Category:Mahjong|Mahjong]] - Has advanced features like captions, templates, and borderless cells.
* [[Sega Saturn Twin-Stick]] - Makes use of borderless cells to create an irregularly shaped table, and has a few instances of colspan.

Fun with tables:

* Adding
class="sortable"
will make it so people can click the table headers to sort the table rows alphabetically. As you'd usually also add the 'wikitable' class this would look like this:
class="wikitable sortable"

* You can use
style=""
like you would with inline CSS. You can put multiple rules in here by separating them with semicolons, eg:
style="color:red; text-align:center"

**
style="background-color:unset"
will remove the background colour of a cell, which you may find useful for headings. Instead of
unset
you can put colour names or hex values here.
**
style="border:none"
will remove the borders of a cell. Other cells that are touching will keep their borders, so it's a nice trick to make empty cells disappear and create a non-square shaped table like on the [[Sega Saturn Twin-Stick]] page. This, combined with removing the background colour, is used for the subheadings like 'Arcade panels' on the [[:Category:Mahjong|Mahjong]] page, which means it can remain as one table all the cells aligned, but can still have a bit of separation.
**
style="text-align:center"
will align text to the centre of a cell. You can also use
left
and
right
.
**
style="vertical-align:top"
will align a cell's contents to the top. Can be handy in combination with rowspan.
* You can use
colspan
and
rowspan
to make a cell span multiple columns and rows:

Here's an example with col/rowspan (it's also placed in a table so I can annotate it on the right :3— [[User:Rjt|rjt]] ([[User talk:Rjt|talk]])):

{|
! style="width:50%" | Code !! Explanation !! Output
|-
|
<nowiki>
{| class="wikitable"
|-
! colspan="2" | Header 1AB
! Header 1C
|-
| Cell 2A
| Cell 2B
| rowspan="2" style="vertical-align:top" | Cell 23C
|-
| Cell 3A
| Cell 3B
|}</nowiki>
| The class
wikitable
will do a bunch of things like add outlines. Usually you would add this.
The exclamation mark marks a cell as a header. Note how the colspan information is added: It has to be separated from the cell content with another vertical bar character. This is the same for style info.

But note that when you include multiple types of formatting information they don't all need to be separated.
| style="vertical-align:top" |
{| class="wikitable"
|-
! colspan="2" | Header 1AB
! Header 1C
|-
| Cell 2A
| Cell 2B
| rowspan="2" style="vertical-align:top" | Cell 23C
|-
| Cell 3A
| Cell 3B
|}
|}

In the example above each cell is on it's own line, but you may find it easier to read (especially for small tables) to put multiple cells on a single line, like this:

<nowiki>
{| class="wikitable"
|-
! colspan="2" | Header 1AB !! Header 1C
|-
| Cell 2A || Cell 2B || rowspan="2" style="vertical-align:top" | Cell 23C
|-
| Cell 3A || Cell 3B
|}</nowiki>

There are also some [[#Templates|Templates]] for use in tables...

===Templates===

''Templates'' are generally little shortcuts you can use for complex or tedious syntax, and elements that are commonly reused.

At the moment we have templates for:

* Leaving notes on pages: [[Template:comment]] and [[Template:nb]]
* For table cell values: [[Template:pos|positive]], [[Template:neg|negative]], [[Template:mix|mixed]], [[Template:unk|unknown]].
* Consistently showing compatibility of adaptors/interfaces. These aren't meant to be complete lists of controllers, just listing different types that might have different compatibility quirks, EG: standard official controller, mouse, multitap, lightgun, turbo controller...
* See all templates: https://videogameinterface.wiki/index.php/Special:AllPages?from=&to=&namespace=10

An [[#Infoboxes|Infobox]] is also a template.

Adaptor for connecting different modern controllers to the Mega Drive and PC-Engine, either via Bluetooth or USB. Typical of Brook, probably as low-latency as you can get. Has good configuration options available with button combinations: you can remap buttons, switch between three and six button mode, etc.

Both these consoles are a bit lacking when it comes to quality joysticks, so this is pretty handy.

They're no longer being made, so prices can be a bit silly, but there's also no alternative if you're after a USB connector.

{{comment|Rjt|Make sure you update your firmware, as my adaptor didn't even have the ability to switch to 6-button mode with the firmware it came with.}}
The two shells/handles can be removed and swapped. I can't think of a game where it'd be useful to have a yoke with two wiimotes or two nunchuks, but if you buy two units it's an option!

I've seen three different boxes for it, and released under various brand names: A-Power, Pega, CTA Digital Accessories, and Ostent.

==Compatibility==

So far, I haven't actually found anything that's fun to play with this thing :O

===Plane Games===

* ''Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII'' - Not tested yet
* ''Copter Crisis'' - Kinda works, but restricts movement (use wiimote vertically like baseless joystick).
* ''Disney Planes'' - Not tested yet
* ''Heatseeker'' - Not suitable: plane follows pointer.
* ''Hyper Fighters'' - Not tested yet
* ''Kid Adventures: Sky Captain'' - Not suitable: played holding the wiimote sideways.
* ''MySims SkyHeroes'' - Not tested yet
* ''Rebel Raiders: Operation Nighthawk'' - Kinda works, but joint on the yoke doesn't move smoothly, so it feels restrictive.
* ''Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces'' - Not tested yet
* ''Stunt Flyer: Hero of the Skies'' - Not tested yet
* ''Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2'' - Not tested yet
* ''Wing Island'' - Not suitable: paper-plane-type motion controls.
* ''WWII Aces'' - Not tested yet

====Plane Games Within Other Games====

* Island Flyover in ''Wii Sports Resort'' - Not suitable: paper-plane-type motion controls.
* Flying stage(s?) in ''Up'' - Not tested yet
Adaptor for connecting different modern controllers to the Mega Drive and PC-Engine, either via Bluetooth or USB. Typical of Brook, probably as low-latency as you can get. Has good configuration options available with button combinations: you can remap buttons, switch between three and six button mode, etc.

Both these consoles are a bit lacking when it comes to quality joysticks, so this is pretty handy.

They're no longer being made, so prices can be a bit silly, but there's also no alternative if you're after a USB connector.

{{comment|Rjt|Make sure you update your firmware, as my adaptor didn't even have the ability to switch to 6-button mode with the firmware it came with.}}

== Compatibility ==

* [[PDP Versus Fighting Pad]] - A PS3 controller with six face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and a clicky stick. The layout's a bit odd, so the default PS3 mapping puts the bottom row as A, B, Z (top row is fine: X, Y, Z), so you'll just need to remap that one button. Works great for ''Street Fighter'', but the clicky stick feels weird for ''Streets of Rage'', double-tapping the directions feels weird.
Attractive, solid, arcade-like stick for the [[:Category:Family Computer|Famicom]]. Buttons and stick are by [[:Category:Seimitsu|Seimitsu]] and use microswitches, but are smaller (24mm) than is typical. Real jump in quality over most console joysticks of the era (except for [[:Category:Micomsoft|Micomsoft]]'s nice [[:Category:XE-1|XE-1]] ones). Joystick has a square gate.

The size and squareness of the case means the bottom-right corner can dig into you palm, which can make it a bit uncomfortable to use without something to rest your wrist on. The short joystick might bug some people too.

The original model has concave buttons, but in 1987 they switched to flat ones.

Various [[:Category:ASCII Stick|ASCII Sticks]] were released for the Famicom and other systems, and later versions included variable-speed [[:Category:Rapid-fire|Rapid-fire]] and [[:Category:Slow-motion|Slow-motion]] functions. Most later versions implement cost-saving measures, such as non-microswitched sticks and buttons, and plastic housing. An identical version was also released for the [[:Category:MSX|MSX]], with the product code AS-3088-MX: [[ASCII Stick for MSX, MSX2]].

The two shells/handles can be removed and swapped. I can't think of a game where it'd be useful to have a yoke with two wiimotes or two nunchuks, but if you buy two units it's an option!
